Q: Can you provide information on the background of Paul Winfield, who narrated the A&E crime series "City Confidential"? He has an unforgettable voice. T.R., Calhoun, Ga.

A: Paul Edward Winfield (1939-2004) was a popular actor, well-known for his performances on television, in film and onstage. For his role in the film "Sounder," he earned an Oscar nomination. For his role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the TV miniseries "King," he received an Emmy nomination. In all, he appeared in more than 120 films and TV shows. Suffering from obesity and diabetes in later life, Winfield passed away from a heart attack at age 64 in 2004. His longtime companion of 30 years, architect Charles Gillan Jr., predeceased him by two years.

A: Thomas William Selleck (1945-) is an actor and film producer, best known for his role as Thomas Magnum on the 1980s television series "Magnum, P.I." He also plays Jesse Stone in a series of made-for-TV movies based on the Robert B. Parker novels. In 2010, he began a new TV series, "Blue Bloods," in which he portrays Commissioner Frank Reagan. Married to model Jacqueline Ray from 1970 to 1982, Selleck adopted her son, Kevin (born in 1966), from a previous marriage. In 1987, he married Jillie Mack. They have one daughter, Hannah Margaret Mack Selleck (born in 1988). The family lives in California.
