CAMBRIDGE Cubmobiles from 11 Mid-Shore Cub Scout packs raced down Court Lane here Sunday, Oct. 2, despite the chill and sometimes rain in the air.
Built along the lines of go karts from decades past rudimentary vehicles fashioned from two-by-fours the cubmobile relies on gravity for its power. Which means a hill that's not too steep but not too flat is a key element for staging the annual competition.
Although counties further north have a few more hills, Dorchester County apparently has the perfect site for a Cubmobile competition along Cambridge's Court Lane an historic side street next to the Dorchester County Courthouse once considered a prime spot for local attorneys to set up office.
On Oct. 2, 144 Cub Scouts and their families converged on Court Lane for this year's Cubmobile Derby, competing aboard vehicles built by their packs.
The cubmobiles lined up for launching from platforms in two lanes at the top of the small hill. Based on the intent looks on the faces of many of the young racers, the hill may not really be that small.
With tires lining the side of the street for protection, cubmobiles occasionally veered off course. Apparently the simple-looking steering system on a cubmobile is really not so simple to use.
