ST. MICHAELS — Beginning in June, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels will offer visitors the opportunity to go out on the water in one of CBMM's wooden sailing or rowing skiffs. CBMM's Sailing Saturdays program runs June 22, July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 7, with two daily sailing sessions running from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
Built by CBMM's Apprentice for a Day public boatbuilding program participants, the boats used range in size and are built for one to two people, with instruction provided for beginners. Sailing Saturdays participants will have access to a melonseed skiff, various rowing skiffs, sailing bateaus and more.
"This is a great way for our visitors to experience being out on the water aboard unique small craft," said Boat Yard Program Manager Jennifer Kuhn. "Participants enjoy the authentic experience of being on the water in some of the nicest, handmade wooden boats in the world."
Drop-in participation is available, but reservations are encouraged as small craft are limited. The cost is $10 per person/session, plus museum admission.
