KENT NARROWS - A crash involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, closed multiple lanes of U.S. Route 50 in Grasonville, left debris scattered across the roadway and backed traffic up for miles.
The crash occurred on Route 50 east just after the Kent Narrows bridge Witnesses reported the tractor-trailer spun in the crash, ending up facing the wrong direction, and the axles were ripped off.
Cpl. Frank Stanco of the Maryland State Police said the truck driver was flown by MedEvac helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment.
One witness said he saw the driver out walking around after the crash; he appeared shaken, but not seriously injured.
All lanes of Route 50 east and one lane of Route 50 west were closed following the crash, and traffic was diverted across the Kent Narrows drawbridge on state Route 18. Traffic in the Kent Narrows area was gridlocked for hours.
MSP anticipated at least a six-hour closure to gather debris, investigate and reconstruct what happened. Police hoped to have the highway reopened before rush hour Thursday morning, Stanco said.
