DILLON, S.C. — Archibald Covington Prevatte, 91, of Dillon, S.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012. He was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Robeson County, N.C., to Theresa Humphrey and M.G. Prevatte. Archie was a graduate of Wake Forest College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He attended the School of Pastoral Care in Winston Salem, N.C., later in his career. Archie was a minister for 41 years, serving at Chadbourn Baptist, Chadbourn, N.C.; in S.C. at Kemper, Piney Grove, Fork, and Bermuda Baptist Churches, of the Pee Dee Baptist Association; and in Maryland at First Baptist of Cumberland and First Baptist of Easton. He returned to Piney Grove as a full time minister where he retired in 1986.

He was Rural Minister of the Year sponsored by the Progressive Farmer, 1954; served as a Trustee of the Southern Seminary (1958-1969); was Vice President of the Baptist Convention of Maryland, 1965; was founder of Friends of Pine Hill Baptist Retreat and the Prevatt(e) Historical Society. He taught high school at Lake View, S.C. (1971-1983). He served as Hospice Chaplain for 8 years. Archie was very active with the Masons, Eastern Star, Pee Dee Baptist Association, and Pine Hill Baptist Retreat.

Archie is survived by his wife, Helen Campbell Prevatte of Dillon; son, Richard Robinson (Linda) of Wye Mills; daughters, Katherine Moye (Michael) of Leesburg, Va., Helen Ann Edwards (Paul) of Surfside Beach, S.C., Billie Gail Britt of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Susan Britt of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Abby Edwards of Charleston, S.C., Jennifer Moye Malmberg (Derek) of Far Hills, N.J., and Major Joseph Moye (Christie) of Valrico, Fla.,; and seven great-grandchildren.
