QUEEN ANNE — A Centreville man died after a two-vehicle crash in Queen Anne’s County Monday morning.
Around 9 a.m. Monday morning, state troopers from the Maryland State Police barrack in Centreville responded to Route 404 and Cordova Road (Route 309) for a two-vehicle crash.
According to a preliminary investigation, a box truck was stopped at a red traffic signal at the intersection. For unknown reasons, a Nissan Frontier, driven by Sam Ferracane, 53, of Centreville, failed to slow down and crashed into the rear of the box truck, police said.
Ferracane was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was declared deceased.
Ferracane was an officer with the Centreville Police Department, the police chief confirmed. Ferracane had joined the CPD in March of this year. He was sworn in officially during the town’s council meeting in May where he and his partner were commended for their effort in helping quickly locate an elderly man with dementia who had wandered away from his caregiver.
Police said Route 404 was shut down between U.S. Route 50 and Route 309 for about two hours following the crash.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team and troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are assisting with the investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.
