Brighter Christmas Fund

Sean is a 15-year-old kid who is in his second year of high school. He wants to play sports, fit in, be liked by others and pass in school.

That’s a little bit more difficult for Sean than it is for other kids his age because his family’s situation has been somewhat fractured all his life, and it has affected his ability to learn.

His father went away to prison when Sean was a baby and has only recently been released. Sean and his mother have been living with her parents all that time.

Life in his grandparents’ house has been as happy and normal as they could make it, but being raised by Grandma and Grandpa while mom struggles to make ends meet at her job can make a kid feel a little unstable.

His mother always has been a hard worker, and these days, she has a long commute to work. Sean is a sensitive, caring kid and very protective of his mother.

He has seen her go through a lot of difficulties and does not want to do anything to add to her burden.

Early on, Sean was diagnosed with ADHD. He has been in treatment and continues to attend treatment sessions after school to help him learn to stay focused and make solid decisions.

He yearns to be a normal kid and is aware other kids probably think he is different. And in the harsh teenage world he lives in, there have been others who have deliberately tried to steer him in the wrong direction.

Most recently, Sean’s father has entered his life — a person he really doesn’t know.

The attempts between the two of them to get to know each other have been full of heartache, resentment and misunderstanding.

Sean’s father has been unable to find work so far, so the anxiety the family faces every day has become greater.

A gift to the Brighter Christmas Fund would help buy a new winter coat and other cold weather clothing for Sean for the holidays.

Sean says he wants a video game for Christmas but doesn’t want to ask for it because he believes his mother cannot afford it.

Your donation to The Star Democrat’s Brighter Christmas Fund could help Sean during the holiday season. Tax-deductible donations, which also help other families in need on the Mid-Shore, may be sent to: The Brighter Christmas Fund, c/o The Star Democrat, P.O. Box 600, Easton, MD 21601.
