EASTON — ShoreRivers seeks a Chester Riverkeeper to act as the lead advocate for the Chester River in our efforts to achieve healthy waterways across Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Riverkeeper is the primary voice for the river and works through the core strategies of advocacy, enforcement, outreach, restoration, education, and water quality monitoring.

The ideal candidate will be a driven, energetic, outgoing individual who is enthusiastic about the environment and the communities served by ShoreRivers.

The Chester Riverkeeper reports to the Director of Riverkeeper Programs and works primarily out of the Chestertown office. This is a full-time position; the employee must be flexible to work evenings and weekends and to travel when necessary. The applicant must be willing to live in the communities served by ShoreRivers. ShoreRivers offers a competitive benefits package and a salary range between $45,000-$65,000, based on experience.


Be the lead advocate for the Chester River by building and maintaining relationships with local elected officials and government staff, representing ShoreRivers at meetings and hearings, and participating in the Maryland General Assembly as the non-partisan voice for the river. Proactively identify issues that may affect the river and respond appropriately.

Provide outreach and education to local communities, including the farming community, waterfront property owners, and local towns and neighborhoods. Maintain a local presence through social media, e-newsletters, presentations, and grass-roots organizing around major issues.

Facilitate the restoration of the watershed by identifying pollution hot spots and suitable locations for best management practices, and by developing and managing funding sources to support projects.

Manage the Chester water quality testing program, including regular site monitoring, pollution source monitoring, and responding to citizen alerts. Patrol the river and its watershed for clean water violations.

Develop funding to support the Chester programs through collaborative efforts with ShoreRivers Development Department staff and by grant writing.

Position Requirements and Qualifications

The Riverkeeper must have a strong commitment to environmental protection and to ShoreRivers’ mission.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental, science, or policy field preferred.
  • 5+ year’s work experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant and program management including grant-writing, organizational skills, budgeting, and coordination.
  • An understanding of aquatic ecosystems, watershed issues, regulatory issues, and the local factors that influence water quality on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak confidently in a public forum.
  • Critical thinking, analysis, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to be diplomatic in adversarial situations.
  • Ability to work independently and to manage others.
  • Ability to work as a team player and collaborate effectively.
  • Experience and familiarity with boats and with water quality testing techniques, protocols, and equipment is a benefit.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
