EASTON — University of Maryland Shore Medical Group recently welcomed Dr. Ivan Pena to UM SMG–Cardiology.

Pena specializes in interventional cardiology and endovascular medicine. He performs a number of procedures, including catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention, endovascular procedures for limb preservation and carotid artery stenting. He also has a special interest in treating cardiogenic shock and pulmonary embolism.

Prior to coming to UM Shore Regional Health, Pena was director of Interventional Cardiology/Vascular at Nanticoke Cardiology and director of the Vascular Ultrasound Laboratory at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, both in in Seaford, Del. He also worked as an interventional cardiologist at Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Del.

A graduate of the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Pena completed a four-year residency in internal medicine at the Hospital Salvador B. Gautier in Santo Domingo, D.R., and New York University in New York, N.Y. In 1999, he became a fellow in NYU’s Cardiovascular Disease Program with a focus on invasive cardiology, and in 2003, became a fellow in interventional cardiology at NYU. He also served several years as assistant professor of medicine in interventional cardiology at NYU School of Medicine University Hospitalists.

A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Vascular Medicine, Pena is certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, vascular ultrasound interpretation by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, as well as by the American Board of Vascular Medicine and the American Board of Endovascular Medicine. He also is trained in advanced cardiac life support.

Dr. Pena joins 10 providers at UM SMG-Cardiology, all part of the Heart and Vascular Center at UM Shore Regional Health, including Drs. Jeffrey Etherton, S. Robert Hanna Jr., R. Bruce Helmly Jr., John Condit Jr., M. Christadoss Rajasingh, Benjamin Remo, Gabriel Sardi and UM Shore Medical Group Medical Director Dr. Timothy Shanahan. There are two advanced practice providers, nurse practitioners Patricia Lancaster and Clare Ross.
