EASTON — Wild Birds Unlimited, located at 8223 Elliot Road Suite 25, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday Aug. 9, bringing consumers and nature together.
The store, owned by Rhonda Matterson and managed by her husband Tim, offers a variety of bird food, bird feeders, bird houses and bird baths for customers. The Matterson’s are on a mission to turn a customer’s yard into a natural habitat that will benefit wild birds.
They also want to bring the splendid beauty of the birds and for customers to their harmonizing songs, as one can hear when walking in the store. They were inspired to open a store in Easton because they not only have a passion for birds, but they also love the Wild Birds Unlimited Philosophy.
“We both love nature and we both decided to take early retirement,” Rhonda said. “I have always enjoyed backyard birds and just watching them and being with them all of my life. We use to be customers of Wild Birds Unlimited Store in Timonium (Maryland). They like to educate the public about birding and importance of feeding, nesting and the right foods.”
The Matterson’s were both born and raised in Maryland. Tim has a Business degree from College of Notre Dame and has always wanted to own his own business. His background is working for the defense industry around Maryland.
Rhonda has a Nursing degree from College of Notre Dame. Her background has been nursing in Continuing Care Retirement Communities. Two of her favorite birds are the Bluebird and Cardinal, and when she is not working, she also does some photography to capture her backyard friends.
According to Tim, it took about 18 months from the beginning to actual time till we signed the franchise agreement to establish the store. The Matterson’s passion of birds would like to be reflected on all customers as they walk on the door.
“We want to give (customers) a wow factor and to see a really nice selections of different seeds and all of the different products that no other store can offer beside us around the area; and they leave with a wonderful experience and they come back and keep coming to us,” Tim said.
Wild Birds Unlimited is the original and largest franchise system of backyard bird feeding and nature specialty stores with more than 300 locations throughout the United States and Canada and are locally owned and operated. WBU specializes in bringing people and nature together with bird feeding, nature products, expert advice and educational events.
“Its speaks well for the future. The (Eastern Shore) have a lot of success over the years, but it seems like it is compounding now, and that is good,” said Dave Wooten, Eastern Shore representative for Comptroller Peter Franchot. “The comptroller has been consistently supportive of the business community on the shore ever since he was elected. It is nice to have that partnership in Annapolis.”
Tim and Rhonda will be at the store full-time along with their two golden retrievers store greeters, Tucker and Nugget. If all goes well with the location, they have plans for a second store in Salisbury.
Wild Birds Unlimited is opened from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit www.easton.wbu.com, or call 410-690-3284.
