PRESTON — Caroline County officials have issued a warning following the capture of a raccoon behaving abnormally yesterday afternoon, Dec. 5, near the Valero (Shore Stop) in Preston. According to town officials, the animal was acting aggressively and may harbor the rabies virus. It will be euthanized and sent for rabies testing today with results later today.

Rabies is usually spread to humans through the bite of an infected (rabid) animal or exposure of the infected animal’s saliva to broken skin. If you were exposed to this raccoon in the manner noted above, please contact the Caroline County Environmental Health at 410-479-8045 at once so that we may do a risk assessment. No action is necessary should the animal be negative for the rabies virus.
