EASTON —  The Talbot County Health Department reported 13 new COVID cases on Sunday, Dec. 27.

There are 122 active coronavirus cases locally. The positivity rate for COVID tests in Talbot has increased to 6.94%.

The statewide positivity rate is 7.48%, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

MDH also reported 1,758 new positive COVID test results on Sunday and 31 new deaths. There have been 5,545 deaths attributed to the virus statewide.

The state health agency also reported Sunday that 19,814 doses of COVID vaccines have been given statewide— including 2,164 shots on the Eastern Shore.

The state is currently offering Moderna and Pfizer coronavirus vaccines to health care workers, nursing home staff, first responders and nursing home patients.

There are also concerns in other countries about a new, more supposedly strain of the coronavirus.

The new strain has prompted shutdowns and travel restrictions in the United Kingdom and Japan.

Japan is barring foreign nationals from entering the country in response to the new COVID strain.
