ST. MICHAELS — Susan Jones of Tilghman Island of will present a program of music and poetry at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library.
Jones’ program, “Sing the Clarinet, Music and Words of Summer and Water,” combines a narrative laced with her original verse, plus selections for the clarinet. She will talk about her island home and her experiences growing up in a water environment in Oregon. Her talk will include verse, narrative and musical selections relating to the water and to the summer season.
Jones was born and raised in northwest Oregon. Both she and her husband, Bob, were active in the Portland musical scene, playing professionally and teaching privately. Susan Jones played for 14 years with the Oregon Symphony.
During their hopscotch odyssey eastward, she continued to play professionally (in Minneapolis, Indianapolis and Washington, D.C.) and in a leap to the west (in Orange County, Calif.).
While in Indianapolis, she earned a master’s degree in library science from Indiana University. She began writing verse while working as a librarian in Indianapolis and now has a collection of nearly 500 verses — almost all of them featuring amusing and intriguing vocabulary words. She has published two collections of her verses.
