Madama Butterfl

Hui He, left, and Elizabeth DeShong appear in a scene from “Madama Butterfly.”

EASTON — Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” starring soprano Hui He in the title role, will be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City to the Avalon Theatre at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.

Tenor Andrea Carè — in his Met-debut season — stars as Pinkerton, with the cast also featuring mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong and baritone Paulo Szot, who reprise their celebrated portrayals of Suzuki and Sharpless, respectively.

Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts this enduring favorite. The transmission’s host is soprano Christine Goerke, who starred in the title role of Puccini’s “Turandot” earlier this season.

Join Jo Ann Kulesza, music director of opera programs at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, at noon in the Avalon for a pre-show discussion. Having been a student of opera since college, Kulesza brings a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience in the genre, fueling her passion for the human voice and all it is capable of.

Tickets are $21, and available online at or by calling the Avalon box office (410-822-7299).
