CENTREVILLE — A former Chestertown resident now living in Centreville has been charged with four counts of sexual child abuse, a felony that is punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison.

The charges against Ronald James Walters, 50, stem from alleged offenses between January 1995 and January 1999.

He is accused of abusing a male under the age of 18, while "being a parent or other person who has permanent or temporary care or custody or responsibility for the supervision of a child or a household or a family member," according to court documents.

Walters currently is a teacher/support services for Queen Anne's County Public Schools, according to court documents.

Prior to that, he was employed by Kent County Public Schools for five years, according to court documents.

He had lived in Chestertown for 10 years.

Walters was served an arrest warrant Nov. 15.

On that date, the Office of the Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney notified Queen Anne's County Superintendent Patricia Saelens of Walters' arrest.

In a statement, Saelens said, “The safety of our students and staff remains my top priority. Mr. Walters was hired by QACPS in August 2021. At no time during the 2021-2022 school year has Mr. Walters engaged or interacted with students, nor has he been in an instructional or supervisory position. This is a personnel issue, and as such I am not at liberty to provide additional information.”

According to court documents, Walters is on supervised release. A condition of his release is that he have no contact with the alleged victim.

Walters has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec. 13 in the District Court for Queen Anne's County. At that time, a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe that Walters committed the offenses.
