WINGATE - The identity of a man who died in a one-alarm blaze at 2126 Wingate Bishops Head Road Wednesday evening was revealed to be 89-year-old Ralph V. Mills, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said Thursday.
According to a preliminary report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Mills was determined to have died from severe smoke inhalation injuries received during the fire.
Deputies continue to investigate the cause of the fire that took nearly 85 firefighters from Lakes and Straits, Church Creek, Hoopers Island, Madison, Taylors Island, Hurlock, Rescue, Linkwood-Salem, East New Market, Trappe, Eldorado's - Brookview, Vienna, Mardela Springs and Sharptown volunteer fire departments less than 30 minutes to control after arrival.
According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, firefighters found Mills inside the kitchen and quickly transported him to Dorchester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators said there were no smoke alarms inside Mills's residence, in which he was the sole occupant.
