GRASONVILLE — The Cross Island Trail will be extended to Grasonville thanks to a state grant of more than $3 million.
The grant first was mentioned in October. In a letter to the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners earlier this month, Gov. Larry Hogan made it official.
According to Hogan’s letter, the project involves improving portions of the existing hiker and biker trail, and construction of about 6,150 feet of extension, primarily on an elevated boardwalk.
The governor said the project provides a healthy alternative form of transportation and supports economic development.
The connecter trail will be north of U.S. Route 50 and will be 1.2 miles long, beginning at the Kent Narrows bridge and continuing to Long Point Park in Grasonville.
The scenic trail is to be predominantly boardwalk over marshlands and water, and will include observation areas.
This is a section of a Cross County Connector Trail, which has a long-term plan to begin at the Chesapeake Bay and end at Tuckahoe State Park.
