Delaware pastor dies Monday in Easton wreck

EASTON — A Delaware pastor died Monday morning, Oct. 14, near Easton when his truck veered off the road and struck a sign and telephone pole along state Route 329 near Lovers Folly Road.

Maryland State Police identified the driver as Shawn Willey, 46, of Bridgeville, Del., and he is the pastor of Abundant Life Church in Laurel, Del.

Police said troopers responded to the reported single vehicle accident at 7:53 a.m. Monday. Police said when troopers arrived, Willey was pinned inside the truck. He was taken to University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

State Police said Willey was traveling south on state Route 329 when he lost control of the truck, left the roadway and struck a sign then a telephone pole before overturning on the passenger side.

The news of Willey’s death sparked an outpouring of messages from his congregation and community members from Maryland and Delaware.

Abundant Life Church posted “In Loving Remembrance of Pastor Shawn Willey” on its sign. The caption on the Facebook post included John 10:10 — “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly..”

Community members have shared the church’s Facebook post more than 100 times.

“So incredibly sad! Pastor Shawn was a great man who made a huge impact on so many lives,” Karli Ennis wrote in a Facebook post on the Church’s page. “We will miss him dearly. Sending love and prayers to his family and all of those whose hearts are now broken due to this tragic event.”

Willey is survived by his wife, Wendy Willey, his daughter, Courtney Willey and boyfriend/adopted son Kyle Conway, his mother, Karen Draper and her husband Richard, his father, Wendell Hudson, his two brothers, T.J. Willey and wife Kandi, and Troy Willey and wife Kalena.
