Festival of Trains

Shown are some of the more than 4,000 visitors who attended last year’s train show enjoying some of the elaborate model trains and the town and backdrop scenery provided to create an exciting display. Children of all ages, from 2 to 102, enjoy seeing the model trains.

CHESTER — The schedule for the 2019 Festival of Trains model railroading show, sponsored by the Queen Anne’s Museum of Eastern Shore Life in conjunction with the Queen Anne’s Railroad Society and the National Capital Trackers organization, has been set for the weekends of Dec. 7 and 8, and Dec. 14 and 15.

The show will be held at the old outlet mall on the Kent Island side of Kent Narrows north of U.S. Route 50/301. Access is easy via exit 41 at the Kent Narrows bridge.

Visiting hours each day will be from noon to 5 p.m. The festival is open to the public free of charge, though donations are appreciated.

Members of the Queen Anne’s Railroad Society and the National Capital Trackers organization will have their displays set up, ranging from the tiny Z scale to the large G scale. The O and HO scales are the most common and most popular.

Many elaborate town settings and backdrop scenery provide picturesque settings for the displays. Many components of the train sets and backdrops are antique, going back to the early 1900s.

Free cookies and beverages will be available. Santa Claus will make an appearance for the children from 1 to 3 p.m. each Sunday. Silent auction and “buy it now” items — relevant to model railroading — will be available. Raffle tickets will be sold with chances to win model train sets.

Attendance at the Festival of Trains show has the second largest number of visitors of any event in Queen Anne’s County each year, second only to the county fair held each August. Last year’s attendance exceeded 4,000 visitors.
