Concrete truck overturns on Longwoods Road

An overturned concrete truck blocks Longwoods Road on Thursday afternoon, April 16, while paramedics work to free the driver from the vehicle.

EASTON — Longwoods Road between Hiners Lane and Airport Road was forced closed shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, April 16, after a concrete truck with a full load overturned and blocked the roadway.

According to police, the driver of the cement truck, Thomas J. Grossnickle, 60, of Taylors Island, was traveling north on Longwoods Road north of Airport Road when, for an unknown reason he ran off the right side of the road and into the soft shoulder.

Police said Grossnickle tried to regain control of the truck and oversteered, causing the vehicle to overturn and come to rest on the passenger’s side, blocking the entire roadway.

Grossnickle was trapped in the vehicle when first responders arrived. He was transported by Talbot County paramedics to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton and was later flown to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Police said Grossnickle was in serious condition Thursday.

Police said the Maryland State Highway Administration was at the scene trying to free the roadway.
