Survey technician shares her skills

EASTON — Teresa Cochrun didn’t get her love of surveying and drafting from school. She was working as a receptionist for an engineering consulting firm in Annapolis and decided surveying looked more interesting. Now she’s shared her love of surveying and drafting with students at Chesapeake College.

“I was interested in surveying,” Cochrun, who loves math, said. “And on Fridays, my boss sat down with me and taught me drafting. The surveyor who worked there taught me surveying.”

Cochrun, who now works as CAD survey technician for RAUCH inc., taught Intermediate CAD last fall.

“CAD stands for computer-aided design,” she said. “In the intermediate course, we used AutoCAD Civil 3D.”

She instructed five students, each from a different career. They all were looking to increase their skills with CAD, and Cochrun was there to help guide them.

She created the curriculum, drawing on the skillsets she uses every day in her job. She introduced real-life case studies of projects based on her own experience.

“They were amazing students,” Cochrun said. “I wish them all the best in their continuing skilled education careers.”

One of Cochrun’s students, James Cook, works for RAUCH inc. as a CAD Drafter in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Though he started his education path focused more on business administration, he’s landed on a path that focuses more on technical writing.

“I’ve always fallen in some kind of technical role one way or another in all the previous jobs I’ve had,” Cook said. “So I knew that was somewhere I needed to be.”

Cook looked into the engineering technology program offered at Chesapeake College, which led him to Cochrun’s course.

“That was great,” he said. “Intermediate was geared toward civil engineering and surveying and the integration there. So the more that I personally know about how civil and survey coordinated, I’m able to do my job better.”
