NEW YORK — U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said President Joe Biden has exceeded progressives' expectations during his first months in office.
Ocasio-Cortez, a standard bearer among progressives, said during a virtual town hall that Biden’s early agenda has pleased the Democratic Party’s left wing. Biden has pushed for immigration reforms, tax hikes on the wealthy, big business and capital gains, infrastructure spending and police reforms.
Biden has also brought the U.S. back into the Paris climate accord and promised to cut emissions by 52% by 2030.
Ocasio-Cortez is a top proponent of the Green New Deal, an ambitious and expensive environmental program to combat climate change and bolster renewable energy.
Progressives and others on the left still have to see how Biden's agenda progresses. That includes a $15 per hour minimum wage which faltered in the U.S. Senate as well as the administration’s approaches to foreign policy, the migrant surge at the Mexico border and antitrust issues related to Amazon, Google and other big technology firms.
Still, Ocasio-Cortez, known for her AOC moniker and social media prowess, is pleased so far.
