Helaine White EASTON--- Helaine Levy White died April 7th, 2021 at her home in Londonderry, Easton, Maryland. She was 96.
Born in New York City March 4, 1925, Mrs. White was the only child of Noah Levy and Stella (Levenstein) Levy. She grew up on Park Avenue, attended private day schools, and graduated from Columbia University. Upon graduation Helaine worked at a publishing house, where she met her future husband, crime and mystery writer Lionel White. The Whites first lived in New York but in 1958 moved to Easton, where they bought a home on Peachblossom Creek. During this period Helaine owned and showed Irish Wolf Hounds, winning Best of Breed at Westminster. The Whites later amicably divorced. Mr. White moved to Hollywood, CA, but Mrs. White remained in Talbot County the rest of her life. She was one of the early female realtors, and founded her own company, where she was noted for running clever provocative ads, and for showing property in her Bentley. Helaine was a member of the American Kennel Club, and a crusader for prevention of cruelty to animals, serving as President of the Talbot County Humane Society. After retiring from real estate, Helaine enjoyed operating an import business, and traveled extensively. She took up sculpting, and was an active member of the Academy Art Museum. Before moving to Londonderry she built a Mediterranean style house on Trippe's Creek, and a Santa Fe style house in St. Michaels.
Mrs. White donated her office building at 130 S. Washington Street to Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.
Mrs. White is survived by her son January L. White , his wife Pam, of St, Michaels; a grandson Sean White, his wife Kara of Raleigh, NC; their sons Leo and Brody; and a grand-daughter Allison White of Yellowstone, WY.
For the past two years Mrs. White was taken care of by Renee, Claire and Paula Schwickrath, Jen Cummings, and Rachel Sutphin, who were aided by the caring hands of Talbot Hospice.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.
