Several authors, in responding to my comments regarding the characteristics of pit bulls, make the common error of confusing temperament and learned behavior. Temperament refers to those characteristics genetically inherited and therefore hard-wired in the animal. They are why bird dogs hunt birds, retrievers retrieve and rabbit hounds pursue rabbits. You may or may not teach your beagle to stay off the couch; you do not have to teach it to chase rabbits.
