Damar Hamlin’s injury was a vivid reminder of how football can be so dangerous on any given play. It was sad and chilling to watch it on national TV. Everyone was pulling for him, both at home and in the stadium, and we all hope he makes a full recovery. Over $4 million dollars have been donated to his charity.
But this traumatic incident is also a vivid reminder that so many Americans are more concerned about a football player who earns millions of dollars than seriously injured soldiers who return from Iraq with prosthesis, PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. We just don’t see an outpouring of love and support for our injured soldiers anywhere near what we have seen for Damar — which is a sad commentary.
And this reminds me of Chris Kyle, who served four tours in Iraq and was awarded several commendations for heroism and meritorious service in combat. In his State of the Union Address, President Obama did not even acknowledge the most lethal sniper in US military history. Nor did he send a representative to his funeral.
One more thing: The NFL should send a substantial donation to a charity chosen by the incredible medics who saved Damar Hamlin’s life.
