While the movie laboriously dragged itself from one unappetizing scene to the next, I couldn't shake a nagging thought: It didn't have to be this way.

"The world has enough superheroes" is the tagline Sony Pictures is using to promote "Venom," an obvious attempt to appeal to movie-goers feeling fatigue from what has been the dominant cinematic genre of the past decade.
