North Bayside athletes won a pair of state titles Thursday on Day 1 of the Class 2A and 1A state track and field championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
Kent Island High’s Sarabeth Caldwell, Reese Delp, Sarah Van Ornum and Kaitlyn Stevens teamed to win the girls’ 3,200-meter relay in the 2A competition, clocking a time of 9 minutes, 32.15 seconds that was more than 2 full seconds ahead of runner-up Century (9:34.59).
Cambridge-South Dorchester sophomore Le’Asia Todd won the 1A girls’ triple jump title with an effort of 35 feet, 7¾ inches.
Wicomico senior Jordyn Dickerson gave the Bayside Conference a third state champion when he won the boys’ 2A shot put with a heave of 53-¼.
A senior, Van Ornum ran a personal-record 10:48.91 to finish second to Overlea’s Temi Ariyo (10:47.80) in the 2A girls’ 3,200 meters.
Queen Anne’s County sophomore Ben Marks placed third in the 2A boys’ 3,200 meters, finishing with a personal-record 9:58.92. Overlea senior Ethan Aidam won in 9:35.19.
Kent Island junior Gabi Bernhard shared runner-up honors with Fallston’s Gabrielle Curriden in the 2A girls’ pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-6. Middletown’s Ava Allen took the title, vaulting 12-7.
Kent County junior Larry Steward was third in the 1A boys’ high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet. Western Tech’s Gamaliel Adejo also cleared 6-foot to win the title, but needed fewer attempts than Steward and runner-up Keyon Wilson of Forest Park.
Cambridge-SD’s Kassidy Young was fifth in the 1A girls’ discus with a throw of 104.
