CENTREVILLE — Senior Lydia Davis scored just 63 seconds into the game Wednesday, starting the Gunston School's field hockey team on the way to a 2-0 victory over Delmarva Christian in an Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference game.

The Herons improved to 2-1 and are scheduled to play Saints Peter and Paul next week for a chance to compete in the ESIAC title game.

Gunston maintained its one-goal edge until 8:12 remained in the second quarter, when junior Paige Holmes added an insurance goal during a scrum in front of the Royals' goal.

The Herons dominated time of possession during the second half, but couldn't get another shot into the cage. Delmarva Christian had a chance to trim its deficit in the third quarter, when it was awarded a penalty stroke. But Gunston senior goalie Erin McDonald made a diving save to preserve the Herons' two-goal cushion.
