Fatal Accident

ROYAL OAK — A Trappe man died Thursday morning in a head-on crash on Royal Oak Road near Loves Folly Farm Road, police said.

Richard B. Firth, 62, was driving east on Royal Oak Road in his gray 2000 BMW 328i when the car crossed the center line about 10:30 a.m., Maryland State Police said.

The BMW hit a red Ford TK truck head-on, police said. The truck was driven by Burnette Ritchie Slacum of Cambridge.

The BMW flipped onto its roof, landing in a ditch on the eastbound side, police said. The truck Slacum was driving ran off the road into a ditch on the westbound side, according to MSP.

Firth was removed from his car by emergency medical personnel and firefighters who responded to the scene.

He was taken to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton where he was pronounced dead.

Slacum was listed in stable condition Thursday night at the Easton hospital.

A state police accident reconstructionist is investigating the crash.

Firefighters from the St. Michaels Fire Department responded, among others, along with Talbot County EMS, Maryland State Police aviation and the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Traffic was closed on Royal Oak Road in both directions for more than 3 hours.
