ST MICHAELS — Pete Howell, a member of the Talbot Cinema Society, launched a Movie of the Month Club on Tuesday Jan. 7, with a group of 13 movie enthusiasts.
The group will meet at 10:30 a.m. on the last Tuesday of each month, starting in January, at the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library.
“This is an opportunity to expose yourself to not only movies, but also to the responses of other folks,” Howell said. “Comparing and contrasting opinions on movies is always a fascinating thing to see.”
During the meeting, the group agreed to select 12 movies and watch one a month for an entire year. Each meeting will be a discussion of the movie, and the group will react to what they saw after viewing at home.
“It is sometimes difficult to talk about a movie you have just seen,” Howell said. “A month time period to watch the film and react to it is a good time frame that each member of the group will need for their benefit.”
Shauna Beulah, manager of the St. Michaels library branch, oversees the program and hopes the group will be as successful as other groups, such as book clubs, the stitch and chat group, and children’s programs.
“I think in this group we will learn to appreciate good films,” Beulah said. “Having the discussion about films and being subjective is key, because we are a small community and I believe this is something that will bring us together.”
The group’s next meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, to select the 12 movies for the year.
